The cradle of mankind

"Hooray! We are celebrating our first year as a family on the bike. We have already cycled over 10,000 kilometers. Unbelievable how fast time has passed. We are gratefully dancing around our tridem and looking forward to our second year!" One year ago today, it all started. We sold and gave away (almost) all our belongings. We gave notice on our apartment and rode our bike out the front door. It took us a little while to say goodbye to our old life. In the meantime we love our new life. We appreciate the freedom, the life in nature and the encounters with people along the road.  Two months ago we made the decision to head east from the Bosphorus. Today we are writing to you from Georgia. We would like to share with you what we have experienced since then. Below you will find again the link to pictures and videos.  From the Bosphorus we take the night bus to the center of Turkey, to Kayseri. "It looks like Mongolia here," Anna says enthusiastically as she looks out...

"In your faces I see your hearts." With this sentence, many people in Turkey touched us. With their hospitality, they also quickly won our hearts.  Two months ago we wrote to you about our life on Emma's olive farm on Rhodes in Greece. Especially the donkeys opened up to us - each animal with its own sensitive character.  Before we left, Katharina's mother and her brother visited us. A few days later Anna's godmother Regula came from Basel with her son Jeremias. Anna was very happy. We are grateful that we could give the...

"Wow, we are alive. And so is everyone dear to us."  That's what we tell ourselves every morning when we get up with a big grin on our faces.  Three months have passed since our last sign of life from Crete. Back then we were guests of Dave and Juliet in a beautifully renovated former olive mill. Now it's time to tell you where we spent the winter and what we have learnt so far. And of course there are plenty of pictures and videos to share. After two wonderful weeks with Dave and Juliet in the west of Crete we went to the "wild" south. There, much is still very untouched. We crossed the snow-covered, over 2,000 meter high "White Mountains" and drove almost 300 km on small roads along the coast towards the eastern end of the island. Every day we had to overcome at least 1,000 meters of altitude. The highest gradient was 16%! We pedaled up and drove down again with squeaking brakes. The maximum speed remains a secret.  We often spent the night on ...
